If you’re an expert in your field, or if you know more than someone else about a given topic, giving advice is most likely helpful.
Asking a chef about how to best prepare a curry dish will allow the meal to become better.
What’s interesting is how people who aren’t experts routinely volunteer their thoughts, views, and opinions to others.
“This is what you should do to solve [fill in the blank].”
This is rarely helpful.
And sometimes, it’s these same people that will avoid the work they can do. This is the builder who refuses to pitch in on a home clean up project for a friend in need, even though there are many less skilled individuals in his field that are working hard to get the situation right.
Give less advice. Do more actual work.
